How does the Nationwide United GP walk work?

  • The walk will be held Sunday October 23, 2011 from 3:00pm-4:00pm or as decided per individual or group. Each person interested in participating only needs to walk 1+ miles around his or her home, park, work or anywhere you decide. You can walk as an individual, with family, friends or as a group.
  • Please submit names with the state you will be representing. Our goal is to get each state involved in this Gastroparesis Awareness nationwide event. Let's get everyone on board walking for a GP Cure!

Send information to:

gpawarenessfund@fuse.net

or

gpawarenessfund@yahoo.com

*Please bring a camera to document your walk. Photos will be used to make the second annual United GP Walk video.

  • We do not profit nor gain on shirt sales. This is a not a for profit event. Those who can’t afford a T-shirt are asked to wear a light blue shirt during your walk. We feel the color blue is appropriate because the sky is the limit on raising awareness walking United for a GP cure.
Let’s all join together helping to raise Gastroparesis Awareness One Step at a Time!

My name is Billie Sweeney and I reside in Winterset, Iowa.

I was an outgoing college athlete whose life was turned upside down when I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis in 1996. I lost the ability to eat solid foods, my weight declined rapidly, and I was unable to do the things that were once such a big part of my life. I didn't have the energy anymore. I couldn't go for a drive with my best friend without vomiting. I couldn't walk down the aisle at my sister's wedding without being injected full of pain medications. MY LIFE HAD FOREVER CHANGED.

Since that time I have continued to suffer from extreme nausea, pain, vomiting, and dehydration. it is difficult to function and have a normal life. There have also been chronic, physical and emotional aspects to this illness. I have to endure numerous feeding tubes, TPN, IV nutrition treatments, and several hospital stays. Imagine never being able to eat, to taste food, to chew food, to swallow food. At one of the worst points in my illness, I was told that my organs were feeding off of each other because they weren't getting the nutrition. My body is STILL starving.

I am one of those statistics, where no one knows why I got this illness-Idiopathic Gastroparesis and I fight daily to live through it. There is currently no specific medication to treat Gastroparesis or a cure. There needs to be better awareness of the seriousness of this illness and more research has to be done.

Please support those who suffer from Gastroparesis. With your help we will find a cure.
