"We Want People
to Assume it's Just as Bad as It Is, but No Worse than It Is"
Living with an invisible chronic illness can mean constantly trying to redefine your
condition. We can't keep up with the rest of the world, and yet the world sees no excuse for our lack of participation. Many
people think "Aren't you overdoing it... or playing it up a little bit?" People's observations do not conform to their expectations
as to what a sick person should look and act like. Therefore, they are quick to become intolerant and suspect that the symptoms
are overstated. As a chronically ill person I am in a constant state of negotiations with my body and my spirit.
What should I give up and what should I fight for? I can participate in "A," but I can't do "B." I still want to do "C" but
it will be a lot more painful than if I skipped "A." I decide to do "A" because I really want to do it, but then along comes
a friend who invites me to do "D." I've already done "A" so am skipping "B;" I really wanted to do both "A" and "C" but now,
to do "D," I'll have to skip "C." I could say "no thanks" to my friend, but than she will say, "but you did 'A' and you're
going to do 'C' so why can't you do 'D?' What's the big deal?" Confusing? Yes, but if you have a chronic illness, chances
are you followed that pretty well, because you've lived it!

Drop a pebble in the water, And its ripples reach out far; And the sunbeams dancing on them
May reflect them to a star.
Give a smile to someone passing, Thereby making his morning glad; It may greet you in the evening
When your own heart may be sad.
Do a deed of simple kindness; Though its end you may not see, It may reach, like widening ripples,
Down a long eternity
